Art and Technology

“I prefer art, not technology.” For those who think “technology just isn’t for me,” and for everyone else too: Maker Faire Rome will surprise you with a variety of experiences that blend art, digital innovation, technology, and humanism. Here’s a preview.

Tessellis – The Circle of Life

Immersive light and sound experience at the Gazometro

Gazometro Area R

Tessellis – The Circle of Life is a powerful immersive installation that fuses light and sound, inspired by Chinese tangrams. The installation features a system of twenty illuminated panels arranged in a 130-metre circle, lighting up with chromatic hues evocative of the animal kingdom. It alternates between abstract and figurative imagery, creating a mesmerising flow of metamorphoses and transformations. The masterful use of light guides the audience along this 130-metre circular journey, revolving around the central axis of the building it inhabits. This circular geometry mirrors the planet’s rotation, symbolising the circularity humanity needs for its future on Earth — circularity in the economy, in energy cycles, and beyond.

Tessellis – The Circle of Life is the work of internationally renowned artist Angelo Bonello, whose creations have spanned over 40 countries.

“Green is the new Black”

Biochar – “The Alchemy of Carbon”

Area B

The Alchemy of Carbon: Exploring Biochar in Art” is an exhibition featuring 30 international artists, united in a pioneering project: creating artworks using Biochar, an innovative material that merges creativity, environmental awareness, and social responsibility. Biochar is a type of vegetal charcoal produced by heating biomass at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen (through pyrolysis). It’s a material with a unique ability to capture and store CO2, offering a sustainable solution for carbon sequestration. By preventing CO2 emissions and promoting environmental sustainability, Biochar becomes a powerful ally in the fight against climate change.

Italia Media Art Festival

Area F

The Italia Media Art Festival was established to explore and promote the intersection of digital art, new technologies, and current issues that concern us all: peace, sustainability, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence. IMAF is a platform where artists, creatives, and innovators come together to share their visions and inspire one another. The works on display include video art, multi-channel video installations, interactive exhibits, and live video performances.
At the IMAF space at Maker Faire Rome 2024, visitors will be immersed in a unique visual and interactive experience: continuous projections of video art pieces exploring the theme “Artificial Intelligence: A Tool for Peace“. These works blend technology and creativity to underscore that the impact AI will have on humanity’s future depends entirely on how ethically we, as humans, choose to wield this powerful tool.
