Pellextruder

A prototype plastic extruder fed by standard industrial plastic pellets instead of plastic filament. The feeding system is using a first-stage Auger (Archimede's screw) pellets conveyor combined with a second-stage co-axial Moineau (progressive cavity) volumetric pump with a heating element, to provide a continuous and controllable source of melted plastic to the nozzle. This volumetric extrusion system can be combined with a low-cost open-hardware 3D printer like a RepRap Prusa i3 to reduce the cost of the plastic (the cost of industrial pellets is around one tenth of the cost of standard filament used now for 3D printing) and this system can be used to provide a low-cost and sustainable way to recycle plastic waste.
