PolyShaper: 3D polystyrene high precision cutting

ThePolyShaper technology is the mean through we can reproduce 3D models on the expanded polystyrene. It is a made in Italy and open hardware technology project that our team are working on the past 3 years. PolyShaper consists on a hot wire reproducing the shape of a common mill tool that coupling with a CNC machine, is able to reproduce complex shapes on polystyrene. This year we are really proud to share the last innovations we did. We implement an important degree of freedom: the revolution of the tool in order to follow complex path and engrave on the polystyrene. Moreover we implement a sophisticate position and orientation control of the workpiece based on the image processing.

Flavio Prattico, Carmine Gianfagna, Carmelo Cera, Tomassino Ferrauto

Flavio Prattico was born in Naples on November 6th 1986. He received his Master degree in Mechanical engineering at the University of L’Aquila in 2011, and, at the same university, he completed his Ph.D. on new stochastic models applied to the wind speed in 2015. He is author of more than ten paper on peer reviewed international journals and ten international proceedings. Since 2014, he has been strategic lead in research co-operation with Shibaura Institute of Technology, facilitating links between the Japanese institution and the University of L’Aquila. The last occupation as researcher was at the University of Rome La Sapienza before he completely dedicated to his start-up.
