FireDrones
During the NASA Space Apps hackathon we developed a system of autonomous drones that are able to enhance the way we can deal with wild fires. The drones are triggered by user alerts (through an app) or by an intelligent “insight system†that combines various inputs such as local sensor data, historical data, risk maps, etc. Computer vision techniques allow us to provide precious data (such as fire size and spreading speed/direction) to the fire fighters, reducing response time from hours (considering satellite latency) to minutes, and letting them arrive with the right tools and vehicles.

We are a group of young students that have just finished attending the ITIS “A. Rossi†high-school in Vicenza. Thanks to Confartigianato Vicenza and our school we had the opportunity to challenge ourselves by participating in two hackathons: “100100 Challenge“ by Confartigianato and “Space Apps†by NASA. We obtained great results in both of them, particularly in the Space Apps competition since we ended up being one of the 5 global finalist teams for the “Best Use of Hardware†prize. We are really passionate about technology and, even if each one of us has a different background, we all want to learn more and more everyday in the fields we love. Our abilites range from mechanical to electronics and software engineering. We also all participated multiple times to the RoboCup Junior annual competition, with great personal satisfaction. The majority of us is now starting to attend university in the seek of more knowledge and concepts to experiment with.
