Our team aimed at creating a support for a boy, called Emanuele, who is affected by a rare desease that caused him unexpectd muscular spasms. Initially, we replaced the back of his wheelchair with an air cushion connected with a piston, which had the purpose of returning back the air at the cushion during the spasm. As a consequence, this mechanism should have softened the sudden movements of Emanuele. Unfortunately, Emanuele exercises a too low pression to the cushion and the piston opposes a too high resistence; so the mechanism did not work. We are currently studying a system of pistons that will replace the tubes of the back of the wheelchair in order to make it recline.

Our team was created during a project of the Polytechnic University of Turin, proposed by Hackability for the college course "Tecnologie per la disabilità". We had to work in cooperation with the user, Emanuele, and his family in order to create a customized product. Emanuele is a 15-years-old boy, who is affected by a rare desease that causes him sudden and unexpectd movements of the body when he feels deep emotions, which can be positive or negative. Of the many ideas which came us to mind, the one we chose was actually a failure because we concentrated a lot to the comfort for Emanuele and we failed to calculate exactly the forces that acted in the system. It was maybe a delusion for the team because we failed at fulfilling Emanuele's wishes, but it was not a defeat. We are studying, in fact, an alternative system of pistons, which can soften the sudden spasms of Emanuele, considering the right values of pression.
