The U.S. Embassy will present two projects:
- NASA Space Apps Challenge.
A global hackathon promoted by NASA and organized in Rome by the U.S. Embassy, ASI, ESA and La Sapienza University, Department of Aerospace Studies. The event will take place in Rome at La Sapienza, Via Eudossiana 18, October 20-21.
- Collaboratory Project
The Collaboratory, a program of the U.S. State Department, designs, pilots, and spreads new ways to further educational and cultural diplomacy.

The project established a virtual collaboration platform between Italian high school Istituto Tecnico Fedi Fermi of Pistoia, the U.S. global collaborative citizen-science project PANOPTES (Panoptic Astronomical Networked Observatories for a Public Transiting Exoplanets Survey), and two U.S.-based high schools (Richland Two Institute of Innovation-R2i2, Columbia, SC; and the Northwestern HS, Albion, PA), to build a robotic telescope for exoplanets observation and a better understanding of our universe. The project includes periodic virtual conversations between Italian high school students (14 to 19 years old) from the Fedi Fermi school, PANOPTES scientists, and the U.S. high schools during an entire academic year, in order to build the telescope, start operating it, and exchange astronomic observations.

The project has several objectives: 1) create a virtual communication channel between Italian and U.S. teens, with the goal of facilitating mutual understanding in English language between the two countries through scientific exploration; 2) experiment with citizen science and DIY know-how in the field of robotic astronomy, with the objective of promoting STEM skills among students; 3) contribute with astronomic observations that can be beneficial for scientific research.
