Energy harvesting: let’s use the environment energy where and when it is needed.
We design devices for the conversion of environmental energy into electrical energy, to power wireless sensor nodes. The prototype device is made up of standard materials, such as steel, 3D printing plastics, an electrical circuit and bars of "galfenol", an innovative alloy of iron and gallium, intrinsically more robust than piezoelectrics. The device is "open" and visible. It looks like a cylinder of about 10cm high with 10cm diameter. The application of relatively small forces (such as those of a rubber hammer) converts enough energy to illuminate a LED lamp.

Daniele Davino is full professor at the Department of Engineering (DING), Universitŕ degli Studi del Sannio, Benevento, Italy. With his group, he does research in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics and Materials Engineering. Main interests are in smart materials and its application as smart actuation/sensing and Energy Harvesting. Also, we work on modeling of hysteresis in magnetic, piezo and smart materials and devices.
