Maker Art - Storms

Storms continue Quayola's research on traditional landscape painting, exploring its pictorial substance through advanced technologies. For years, Quayola has used technology as a lens to examine the tensions and balances between seemingly opposing forces: the real and the artificial, the figurative and the abstract, the old and the new. Building immersive installations, often housed in historically significant architectural sites, he is committed to the reinvention of canonical images through contemporary technologies. Landscape painting, sculpture and classical iconography are some of the traditional aesthetics he uses as a starting point for his hybrid works of art and immersive installations.
His varied practice is based on creating customized software to be expressed through audiovisual performances, videos, sculptures or works on paper.
Storms is a series of video works that deepen Quayola's research on the tradition of landscape painting, exploring its pictorial substance through advanced technologies. Ultra-high resolution footage of Cornish's stormy seas serves as a dataset to generate new computational paintings.
In Storms, litanies of waves unfold over a nullified space. The works paint themselves on the flow of dilated time, pictorial forms that unravel on the canvas/screen that crumble towards abstraction. Although the link with reality is thinned at the retinal level, the paintings are generated from identical natural data acquired en plein air. The machine is programmed to produce a
"traditional painting" of a digital substance, a pixel painting. Humans and machines, collaborating, investigate the hierarchies between man, nature and technology, generating new aesthetics.
