Arduino-based organ perfusion system.
What is the context of your innovation?
Isolated perfusion has represented for decades the best model for studying the physiology of many organs; and still today it is a valuable tool for many fileds of basic and preclinical research. However perfusion machines are very expensive , limiting the opportunity for scientists with scarce finacial resources.
What is your project about?
We build a modular. low cost and easy to use perfusion system , based on Arduino board. The system can be applied to different fields of basic research.
What are the next steps?
We are using our perfusion system in a research project to measure the variations of the mechanical proprieties of the liver during its regeneration after partial resection.
Stefano Di Domenico, Irene Nepita, Matteo Santoliquido, Franco De Cian.
Stefano Di Domenico is an inquisitive senior surgeon who embodies a do-it-yourself approach: he has constructed training phantoms to educate residents on placing central vein catheters under ultrasound guide and to master bronchoscopy. His fascination with Arduino led him to design and build the perfusion system. Irene Nepita, a biomedical engineer, play a crucial role in collecting, analyzing, and understanding data. Joining the team with fervor are young surgeons Matteo Santoliquido and Beatrice Palermo. Guiding and inspiring us is Franco De Cian, an eminent professor of surgery: our mentor.
