SIDE: Simulated Dynamics Exoskeleton
What is the context of your innovation?
Virtual Reality allows you to explore and interact with simulated scenarios. Among other applications, the training of workers operating in hostile environments has great potential. To date, immersion is guaranteed for the sense of sight and hearing. The sense of touch and physical effort is not yet reproduced.
What is your project about?
SIDE is an upper limb exoskeleton, completely wearable, without movement limitations, which allows you to "feel" the physical effort associated with the manipulation of virtual objects. The haptic feedback provided to the user increases the immersion and effectiveness of the Virtual Reality experience.
What are the next steps?
The prototype currently has a TRL of 6. Its operation and its ability to provide haptic feedback to subjects during a simulated work session in a confined environment were tested. We are currently testing its effectiveness in improving the training of workers employed in this type of activity.

The team includes researchers from four universities: Sapienza, Tuscia, Unicusano and Federico II, together with the research group of the DIT of INAIL. It is a multidisciplinary team with expertise in biomechanics, sensors, robotic control, mechanical design, virtual reality and working conditions in particular environments such as confined or suspected pollution. Part of this team has already created exoskeletons and robotic devices for rehabilitation. Devices that can only be created thanks to 3D printing and rapid prototyping.
