RINGHIO: Heritage & Infrastructures Observations
What is the project about?
Inspection and Monitoring of different types of infrastructure using cutting-edge technological solutions that allow prolonging the lifespan of structures by predictive maintenance. The importance of preventing disasters is fundamental to improve socio-cultural and economic development has been increasingly recognised.
Where did you get the idea?
The collapse of the Morandi Bridge and that of the Schola Armaturarum at Pompeii faced us with the need to provide an innovative technological solution to prevent disasters in different contexts. While they might seem very different, modern infrastructure and cultural heritage sites need a solution that allows for a fast and accurate inspection
How did you transform the idea into a real project?
Ringhio, a robotic prototype, was inspired by the large inspection robots used on the San Giorgio bridge in Genova. Designed to be more versatile and cost-effective, Ringhio was developed through a collaborative effort involving engineers, programmers, and designers.

The Industrial Robotics Facility (InBot) tackles the challenges of bringing current robotics research to mainstream industrial use cases. Thus, we bridge the gap between the academic and industrial forefronts and specialize in the automation complex labour-intensive tasks. These tasks normally require dexterous motion and compliant material handling. Consequently, our research goals are also aligned towards dexterous manipulation, elasticity and compliant material control.
