What is the project about?
Our project aims to show how immersive virtual reality can shape our minds and behavior by changing the body we feel as our own. By presenting three different virtual reality experiences, we will show participants that it is possible to feel like we own a virtual body different from our own and how being inside this body can change our minds.
Where did you get the idea?
The project stems from scientific literature that shows how the characteristics of an embodied virtual body can affect an individual's attitudes and behavior. We wanted to use the embodiment illusion of virtual bodies to tackle topics such as female empowerment, ethical behavior in online environments, and responses to virtual touches.
How did you transform the idea into a real project?
Once we established our experimental paradigms by studying the relevant literature, we built our virtual avatars and all the necessary scene props with 3d modeling software and recorded the required animations via motion capture. Finally, we coded all the required scripts in C# and implemented the projects with Unity Engine.

We are a team of researchers in cognitive, affective, and social neuroscience at the Neuroscience and Society line of the Center for Life Nano- & Neuro-Science (Italian Institute of Technology) and members of the Rome-based AgliotiLab. All the team members have a PhD in Neuroscience and specialize in investigating the relationship between the body and the mind. Our research inquiry led us to become makers, pushing us to learn how to develop immersive virtual reality experiments in order to pursue our scientific investigations.
