"HappyShinyTable" V.3 (2024 edition, more LEDs!)

What is the project about?
A modified IKEA coffee table, whose unbreakable glass top rests on 3 load cells, thanks to which Arduino can know the precise position to the cm of an object placed on it and display it through a matrix of 800 addressable RGB LEDs. This allows for teaching (center of mass of multiple objects) and also for playing.

Where did you get the idea?
The original idea dates back to 2015, from a first version with very few "pixels (i.e. LEDs, initially just over 100), we moved on to the 2018 version with 171 LEDs and finally to the current version, which with 800 RGB LEDs allows very detailed graphics, and then colored with animations that show the position of a supported object.

How are creativity, technology, ingenuity and innovation combined in your project?
In addition to the STEAM teaching function, this new high resolution graphic version allows you to play Tetris and other games simply by touching the table (thanks to the load cells the position of the touch is known to the Arduino, which controls the graphics on the matrix LED).

The team has been working since 2014 at the scientific fablab of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, has a scientific training and makes objects for STEAM teaching but also for fun, and loves colored LEDs :) We also organize Maker Faire Trieste.
