Innovation told by Universities and Research Centres at Maker Faire Rome 2022

Agritech and space rovers, artificial intelligence against bullying and technologies for maxillofacial reconstruction: these are some of the projects of Universities and Research Centres that will take part in Maker Faire Rome 2022

For 10 years, Maker Faire Rome have turned the spotlight on technological and innovative excellence, giving center stage to the projects of Italian and international Universities and Research institutes.

Universities have always been the places devoted to the “production of knowledge”. Today their function has remained unchanged, but the most advanced universities have also become centers of development of projects, patents and innovative devices: the following stories are a concrete example of this goal.

Bio-Box: the monitoring system to support micro-farmers

Bio-Box is a project that aims to break down the walls of smart farming, making the sector accessible to small farmers through open source tools.

It was created by a group of students from the engineering faculty with a passion for innovation and for their homeland, who wanted to make their contribution by promoting and encouraging the development of the primary sector through technological devices.

Specifically, Bio-Box is an open source and low cost environmental monitoring system, accessible to micro-farmers, based on Arduino technology and Lora, that uses a cloud system.

It consists of two different monitoring devices and a telecommunications system capable of providing data on both soil quality and air quality, enabling small farmers to optimise the use of resources and improve their products.

The space rovers of SASA-Technology Team

The Sapienza Technology Team is one of the 4 teams of SASA (Sapienza Aerospace Student Association) composed by university students of various faculties: from aerospace to electronic engineering, from artificial intelligence to robotics, all united by a passion for innovation.

Since 2016, the team has designed and built Rover prototypes, as well as developing new skills by applying the knowledge acquired during the university course, with a particular focus on aerospace, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Sapienza Tecnology Team will be present at Maker Faire Rome 2022 with several projects and will present the latest prototype of Rover made during this year: a device able to navigate independently on different types of terrain bypassing any obstacles, equipped with a 6 degree of freedom robotic arm that allows it to perform manipulation operations on electronic panels, to collect surface soil samples and to place probes on the ground.

BullyBuster: the bullies catcher system

BullyBuster is a framework for the detection of bullying and cyberbullying that exploits the potential of artificial intelligence to help, prevent and intervene quickly, in case of critical situations.

This project provides many innovative solutions. Among them a system that can detect suspicious movements of the crowd and analyze facial expressions to identify bullying actions in progress. It’s also avaible a text-based analysis feature, able to identify the use of words and phrases typical of cyberbullying and stalking. There is another system that can detect cases of facial deepfake: photos or videos manipulated thanks to AI, which create perfect copies, but fake, of people.

The staff that carried out this project is composed of professors, researchers, PhD students and collaborators of the Universities of Bari, Cagliari, Foggia and Naples, that have created four research groups specialized not only in technology and artificial intelligence, but also in law and psychology.

ScaffoldLyo: an innovative technology to repair maxilo-facial defects

ScaffoldLyo is a 3D-printed PSI designed to repair maxillofacial defects and promote the formation of the bone matrix thanks to the regenerative action of liosecretoma.

The reconstruction of maxillofacial defects, congenital and acquired, is a complex challenge in functional and aesthetic terms. Autogenous grafts are still considered by many to be the “gold standard” for reconstruction. However, they are often associated with unpredictable rates of resorption and morbidity of the donor site.

The advent of additive manufacturing, 3D printing, and recent advances in these technologies has positively influenced the biomedical field leading to the use of patient-specific implants (PSI) in surgical repair of maxillofacial defects.

The ScaffoldLyo project was conceived and developed by P4P, start-up and spin-off of the University of Pavia, born from the meeting of university researchers, expert in the design and preparation of “intelligent materials”, and developed in collaboration with the company PharmaExceed s.r.l. specialized in the biotech sector.
