PON-PLACE project aims to test new technologies for the monitoring and environmentally sustainable reuse of offshore platforms at the end of their life cycle. As part of this project, the PRISMA Lab in collaboration with Eni has developed a drone capable of landing in water and lowering an innovative immersion measuring station for the in situ detection of biological parameters. The drone will be equipped with an automatic garage that will allow the remote planning of inspection missions and continuous monitoring of remote sites. Would you like to know the details of this project that was featured at Maker Faire Rome 2021? We talked about it with the team that brought the project to the fair, and in particular with Vincenzo Lippiello, Professor of Automatic Control and Robotics at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Naples Federico II, where he is responsible for the Flying Arena of the Prisma Lab Robotics Laboratory. Lippiello is also founder and CEO of the innovative startup and spin-off Neabotics.
What’s PLACE?
«PLACE is a project funded by the Ministry of Universities and Research».
PLACE aims to test, for the first time at national level, cutting-edge technologies and solutions for the eco-sustainable re-use of offshore platforms located off the Abruzzo coast at the end of their production phase
«As part of this project, an amphibious drone has been developed that is able to carry out measurements in the water column at depths of up to 50 m in a completely autonomous manner. Thanks to this innovative technology, it will be possible to regularly monitor the biological state of our seas, search for pollutants, monitor seasonal and annual trends with geolocalised data and much more».
What is Neabotics?
«Neabotics is a spin-off of the PRISMA Lab robotics laboratory of the University of Naples Federico II. We develop customised robotic systems for inspection and maintenance in different sectors, such as petrochemical, railway, environmental».
Why did you decide to bring your project to Maker Faire Rome?
«To show the technological progress that can be achieved by investing in research in national companies that have been established over the years and that can contribute to the progress of our country and the creation of new skills and jobs».
How would you describe your experience at Maker Faire Rome?
«We had a clear response of interest from visitors for the solutions we showed, regardless of age group and origin».
What do you think of the location?
«Very beautiful and evocative. And for a spin-off like ours, which also develops robotic solutions for inspection in refineries, it’s the best».
