TESSELLIS: the amazing site specific artwork by for Maker Faire Rome

TESSELLIS – THE CIRCLE OF LIFE. An artwork by Angelo Bonello at MFR2024

Tessellis – The Circle of Life is a project curated by Francesco Paolo Conticello. Music are by Formisanoff; text by Fortunato D’Amico. Only at Maker Faire Rome 2024

Angelo Bonello explores art and its manifestations by adopting an aerial perspective that allows him to observe, from a global viewpoint, the ethical and aesthetic phenomena that influence the production of the artifices that surround us. As he approaches deeper details, this perspective takes on an analytical, firmly structured, and intimate lens.
His observation opens up to sensitive and evocative scenarios, revealing the existing relationship of completion between the micro and the macro. A careful and daring traveler in the territories of inaccessible lands, Angelo Bonello btranscends the boundaries that confine knowledge within the restrictive sectors of
specialisation.

Tessellis – The Circle of Life

With his bold art, he soars where knowledge becomes a spark to illuminate the dark areas of reality—whether physical or transcendent—and acts to implement conscious changes, useful in restoring the balance between nature and artifice.
The light installation Tessellis, set up in Rome at Gazometro G3, transcends mere visual beauty, becoming a totalising sensory experience. It goes beyond an aesthetic display, proposing itself as an immersion in the crucial themes of contemporaneity: circular economy, the rhythms and seasonal alternations of nature, and, above all, the celebration of differences in all their forms.

Inspired by the Tangram

The work is structured around the Tangram, an ancient Chinese puzzle that, through the combination of simple geometric shapes, generates complex images. Bonello uses it as an allegory for life itself: an articulated harmony that arises from the fusion and synthesis of seemingly disparate elements, creating a representation that is as pleasant as it is refined. Twenty illuminated panels, arranged in a circle 130 meters in diameter, light up with chromatic shades evocative of the animal kingdom, alternating between abstract and figurative language, in an unstoppable succession of metamorphoses and transformations.

Each tile, with its unique shape and color, represents a distinctive element. Their union generates a holistic image, complete in itself, serving as a metaphor for the entire natural system. Similarly to biodiversity, with its wealth of species and ecosystems, this union also creates a dynamic balance. The Tangram puzzle, used as an allegory, demonstrates how an articulated harmony, born from the fusion and synthesis of dissimilar elements, is the essential condition for human society, democratic pluralism, and the multiplicity of opinions.
Light, spreading in a kaleidoscope of colours, manifests as vital energy, the very soul of the natural world. The endless cycle of light and shadow, the succession of day and night, the rhythm of the seasons, all represent the eternal becoming of its fluctuating alternations. The circularity of the work resonates in harmony with these rhythms, evoking a sustainable future based on regenerative production and respect for the laws of nature.

The delineating circumference, a central element of the work, symbolises the totality of the Earth, as well as the celestial spheres with their cyclical movements. Tessellis is a map of the sky, a zodiacal horoscope of animated constellations, sensitive to seasonal changes. It is an invitation to look towards a shifting horizon, always in tune with the alternation of progress and retreat, in the awareness that existence is a continuous cycle of transformation and renewal.

The straight lines structuring each panel harmoniously integrate into the rotating shape, creating perfect symmetry. This image evokes cosmic consonance and the perpetual quest for balance between humans and nature. These straight lines, within the round area, weave the fabric of a symphonic sound born from the close connection between the invisible and the visible, in the eternal dance of celestial spheres. Tessellis is a map for nocturnal flights, an ode to the starry sky, a luminous and hopeful message for building a new humanity, a beacon of optimism in a contemporary civilisation torn by political and ideological divisions, still searching for its own identity.
