KITANO è Presidente e CEO di Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc., Vice Presidente Esecutivo di Sony Corporation, CEO di Sony AI, Presidente del Systems Biology Institute e Professore presso l’Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University. È anche presidente fondatore della RoboCup Federation, presidente della International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) (2009-2011) e membro dell’AI & Robotics Council (2016-2018) e del Quantum Computing Council (2019-2020). ) del Forum economico mondiale.
Ha ricevuto il Computers and Thought Award dalla International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence nel 1993, il Prix Ars Electronica 2000, il Design Award 2001 dal Japan Inter-Design Forum e il Nature Award for Creative Mentoring in Science (Mid Carrier) nel 2009, così come come artista invitato per la Biennale di Venezia 2000 e il Museum of Modern Art, New York nel 2001.
