Robotics in rehabilitation: from research to clinical practice. Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi’ s experience.
Fondazione Don Gnocchi (FDG) recently invested in upper limb robotic rehabilitation. In 2015, a set of 4 devices was identified by a multidisciplinary team. After a preliminary pilot study in Rome (S. Maria della Provvidenza), the set was deployed in other 7 centres and a multicentre RCT on 224 stroke patients was carried out. To date, robotics is part of routine clinical practice in 10 FDG centres, and all the collected data are aggregated in a centralized database. The experience of FDG is a model of the implementation of robotics in clinical practice, providing a high-level treatment”.

FDG Robotic Rehabilitation Group
The FDG Robotic Rehabilitation Group was created in April, 2015, under the guidance of the center “Santa Maria della Provvidenza”, in Rome. It is a multidisciplinary team consisting of medical doctors, bioengineers, rehabilitation therapists and technicians. The aim of the FDG Robotic Rehabilitation Group is to promote the implementation of robotics in clinical practice within the FDG centers. Recently, the Group carried out a large multicentre RCT on more than 200 patients with stroke, to evaluate the efficacy of robotics.
