From Salerno, a new road technology concept to promote sustainable mobility and reduce air pollution.

Ecological and sustainable mobility is a much-debated topic, especially in larger and more congested cities. In fact, if you want to drive your own vehicle, it is in the large urban centers where you encounter the greatest difficulties, such as traffic, poor road maintenance and, consequently, noise and air pollution. Not to mention the costs!

As a matter of fact, cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) consume much more when they are driven in lower gears and they also need to use part of their combustible to transport the fuel tank. For all these reasons, a team of developers from Salerno has created H.E.R.A., (Hexagonal Electric Road Advanced) a new concept of intelligent electrified road technology.

The idea stems from what is perhaps a little known fact. Namely, that any vehicle, thanks to the replacement of the rear wheels, can become a hybrid vehicle (gasoline and electric) with a 100% green propulsion. But how is a hybrid car recharged?

This is where H.E.R.A. technology comes into play. Thanks to the electrically powered hexagons, embedded in the special metallic asphalt, vehicles are recharged with a direct power feed while in motion, up to a speed of 31 mph (50 km/h), which also eliminates the need to transport heavy batteries.

Made with recycled materials (metal recovered from demolished vehicles or plastic from old tires), the electrified road surface reduces air pollution by 70%, acoustic pollution by 70%, and road maintenance costs by 95%.

Since it is the road itself that recharges the electric vehicle, it is also possible to measure and monitor the power and velocity of vehicles on electrified roads that are near schools or pedestrian crossings, thereby, increasing road safety.
