Internet of Things at Maker Faire Rome 2022

Smart IOT products and services from makers and companies

At Maker Faire Rome 2022, several IoT won the audience and media attention for their potential to impact daily life

The objects of today are smart. With this statement we are not only referring to technological devices, such as computers, smartphones and tablets, but also to the simplest objects in our homes, offices, cars or in the cities.

“Things” that we interact with in everyday life that become part of the digital world thanks to the Internet of Things. The term indicates a network of physical objects, equipped with sensors, software and other integrated technologies, that allow you to connect and exchange data with other devices and systems through the Internet.

Until a few years ago, it was unthinkable to adjust the lighting or the temperature of our home, or move furniture remotely or with the sole use of the voice. And also think about advanced driver assistance systems, which use IoT technology to help drivers avoiding accidents, planning itineraries, or parking.

The Internet of Things has also allowed cities to become smart and therefore also more sustainable and efficient: IoT devices can generate large volumes of data in real time, which are then collected and managed to optimize goods and services for the community.

These are just a few examples, but the fields of application are potentially endless. At Maker Faire Rome 2022 there were many protagonists who created smart products and services that can move furniture using only your voice, safeguard beaches, actively monitor cold rooms reducing management time and consumption or use the light of street lamps to manage energy consumption responsibly.

SOF’ up – Move your furniture with your voice

Technology became an integral part of our daily lives and connected objects are transforming our homes, almost to make them human. Houses able to interact with those who live there, who listen and who take care of the household for us.

Riding this trend of the smart homes, the company SOF’up created a kit that allows you to lift, move and reposition your home furnishings thanks to simple voice commands, giving rise to a new era, that of dynamic furniture.

The Kit has already been installed on different types of furniture, including sofas, chaise longue, storage furniture, dresser and more.

A new interactive experience that requires no physical effort and that will increase the pleasure of living your own home, greatly facilitating the cleaning of your apartment.

Playa libre

Playa Libre is an autonomous IoT system, created by the company Hedya, which allows you to achieve two main objectives. First of all, it allows to convey the tourist flow on beaches less crowded, by limiting the damage of erosion of the beach, also ensuring a more satisfying experience for tourists who are on the beach.

On the other hand, it is a useful tool for the PA, able to provide real-time information on the state of the coast. In addition, Playa Libre contributes to raising citizens’ awareness of environmental aspects and the need for optimal conservation of natural resources.

Playa Libre has ground stations, usually installed on a pole, with an attached photovoltaic system, with a set of weather sensors and a webcam. The data acquired is transmitted (on mobile network, LPWAN, WiFi) to a cloud platform that implements the Social IoT. The system interacts with users via app and, based on user preferences and characteristics of the beaches (such as the presence of services or the degree of windiness in real time) suggests the best destination, also providing the optimal itinerary and timing of the trip.

REFRI: the intelligent controller for the active monitoring of cold rooms

An intelligent device that, thanks to special sensors, detects temperature and humidity of industrial refrigerators. Refri’s touchscreen panel also makes it easy, practical and intuitive to use.

Through a IoT platform and a dedicated app, Refri reports in real time daily logs, alarms or malfunctions, and has a double advantage: for the customer, because it reduces the damage due to the loss of perishable materials, and for the installer, because it allows a rapid diagnosis and interventions remotely, at reduced costs, detecting the possible failure in a short time.

In addition to this, the smart controller greatly reduces food waste and helps to minimize the negative impact of cold rooms on the environment.

The project was created by the maker Antonio D’Antuono, who has always worked as a software developer and has recently started a small company that is always looking for new investors to develop innovative projects, just like the one presented during Maker Faire Rome 2022.

Nextlight – Powered by NEXTON

A technology IoT solution, designed by NEXTON, that transforms lighting networks into an intelligent infrastructure, opening new opportunities for lighting.

The project is the result of an effective combination of hardware and software and allows you to monitor, track and remotely control the street lamps, also obtaining data on energy consumption in real time. Nextlight is compatible with existing LED network lamps and consists of an integrated hardware with IoT technologies and cutting-edge communication systems.

The sensors inside the hardware allow the system to adapt itself to the needs in terms of energy, favoring a high energy saving, up to 70%.

Through the NEXTON dashboard software, data is collected and organized into easy-to-read visual outputs and energy consumption data are translated into periodic reports. In this way, also relying on the high reliability of LED solutions, with Nextlight it will be possible to indirectly save on maintenance by developing predictive maintenance plans.
