Motorcycle safety: a device that detects the distance of cars

increasing road safety for bikers by revealing the distance of cars and trucks behind them

Road safety for motorcyclists is a very important issue for the motorcycle industry. In fact, the motorcycle as a means of personal transport renders the rider particularly vulnerable in the event of an accident, especially if the four-wheeled vehicles such as cars and trucks do not respect the safety distance, both on highways and in urban areas.

For this reason, the designer-makers Pierluigi Zerbini and Andrea Orazi have created a device that detects and precisely measures the distance of cars or other vehicles traveling directly behind a motorcycle.

In detail, the Motoalert device detects the distance of the vehicle that is following a motorcycle. When a car gets too close, also in relation to speed, a warning message is displayed on an LED matrix, with the purpose of warning and inducing the car driver to slow down and most importantly to respect the safety distance.

This project, whose initial inspiration was born thanks to two motorcyclists who visited Maker Faire Rome 2018, will be presented at  Maker Faire Rome – the European Edition 2019 – the world-famous innovation &  technology fair that will be held from 18 to 20 October at the Fiera di Roma.
