Technology can play a fundamental role in the management of severe or slight mobility disabilities, thanks to increasingly advanced devices and also to an event such as the Maker Faire Rome – the European Edition 2019. This innovative technology fair could not help but also give ample space to projects concerning mobility disability. In fact,
we present three projects, in particular, that focus on improving the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities and patients with reduced mobility.
Row-Ro Hand Brace. This device was specifically designed for Rosina, a girl suffering from incomplete tetraplegia (damage to the spinal cord), as part of the Health&Care Summer School workshop projects organized by Fab Lab OpenDot. The basic structure of the Row-Ro Hand Brace is made of neoprene (synthetic rubber), together with two Velcro strips, and some rigid plates, and has the purpose of facilitating and supporting the ability of the human hand to grip objects, thereby, allowing the girl to even be able to row a canoe.
EasyEM Pants. This garment was designed specifically to simply the daily life of those individuals who have mobility problems in their lower limbs such as the elderly, the chronically disabled, patients with bone fractures, amputations or neurological disabilities. These pants are very easy to put on and take off, and at the same time, they look trendy and fashionable. The objective is to increase both autonomy and self-esteem, which has a positive influence on the psychological well-being of the disabled and, thereby, significantly reduces feelings of inadequacy.
Q-WALK. After triumphing at the BioUpper, an important Italian Life Sciences platform that supports the best entrepreneurial projects, now this impressive device arrives at the 2019 Maker Faire Rome. As a wearable device that is worn slightly below the knees, the Q-WALK by projecting light signals, facilitates the walking of Parkinson’s disease patients. The project was conceived and patented by three physiotherapists who are also the founders of the QuicklyPro startup.
