Università degli Studi di Verona

The National Evaluation Agency for research and university system (ANVUR) awarded the Department of Computer Science of the University of Verona a grant for being an Excellent Department.
The project Computer Engineering for Industry 4.0 received funding for 8 million euro to be used in the next 5 years to extend the Department research areas with the development of a new research action in computer science for Industry 4.0, making the computer science technologies usable and accessible for companies in this new industrial reality.

The project has three scientific-technologic objectives:

  • Safety and security

  • Automatic design

  • Diagnosis and maintenance

The main actions of the project are:
• Hiring qualified personnel to carry on this new research development (professors and researchers).
• The implementation of a laboratory for Industry 4.0 (ICE lab) with a modern production line, extended with equipment for augmented reality and digital production, and connected with the university computational platform plus new hubs, interfaced with and embedded in CloudVeneto.
• The definition of a new Master Course in computer science engineering with specific expertise in computer engineering for Industry 4.0.

The project implementation will exploit the 6 enabling technologies for Industry 4.0 already present in the research areas of the Department, which will permit the definition of ad hoc research paths for computer engineering for Industry 4.0:

TA1. Advanced Manufacturing Solutions <=> Cyberphysical systems
TA2. Augmented Reality, Additive manufacturing <=> Smart systems
TA3. Simulation <=> Mathematics – Applications and Modeling
TA4. Industrial Internet <=> Cyberphysical systems
TA5. Cloud, Cyber-Security <=> Software Engineering and Security
TA6. Big-Data and Analytics <=> Information Systems

The project will take advantage, together with the competences of the researchers in the Department, of the advice of the local companies, constituting an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB), and of the expertise of a Scientific Advisory Board composed of international experts.

Università degli Studi di Verona

Founded in 2001, the Department of Computer Science at University of Verona promotes and supports a large number of activities in academic research and teaching, from mathematics and computer science to computer engineering and physics.
The Department has approximately 200 professors, research assistants, PhD students, postdoctoral students, administrative staff and technical staff.
It has nine active research areas:
• Bioinformatics and medical informatics
• Experimental and applied physics
• Computation theory
• Software engineering and security
• Mathematics – applications and modelling
• Discrete and computational mathematics
• Cyber-physical systems
• Information systems
• Machine intelligence
The Department of Computer Science’s mission has always been to pursue excellence in academic research in the areas of expertise of its staff, and to offer its students avant-garde courses to keep up with the demands of an ever-changing market.
This is demonstrated by its many academic publications (2000 international publications from 2009-2015), participation in projects financed by national and international entities (26 projects, €7.7 million) and industry collaborations through applied research with a strong focus on technology (7 spin-off initiatives and new companies, 10 patents and 253 projects amounting to €4.8 million) representing the Computer Science Park (https://www.csp.univr.it/), also present with a virtual stand at the Maker Faire.
