ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND TEXT COMPREHENSION: FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS? AT maker faire rome 2023 the INNOVATION BY SONY CSL, GOLD PARTNER OF THE EVENT
From 20 to 22 October the results of ARTIS, the project stemming from the partnership between Sony CSL and CRC Rome at Maker Faire Rome 2021
The acronym ARTIS stands for Adaptive Reading Comprehension Interface for SEND* Students (*Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). As in many other cases, beyond the acronym – a method often used to give a name to scientific projects – there is really much more than just the literal meaning.
ARTIS stems from the collaboration between Sony Computer Science Laboratories – Paris and CRC – Centro Ricerca e Cura di Roma, a project conceived at Maker Faire Rome two years ago, when Martina Galletti, Sony CSL researcher – Paris and Eleonora Pasqua, CRC speech therapist from Rome, met. During an initial simple exchange of information on what their respective skills are, both acknowledged common areas of interest and intervention. They started to imagine potential partnerships between the two organisations – one focused on the exploration of new areas of research, cutting-edge technologies and new paradigms useful for the common good (Sony CSL) and the other engaged in clinical research, care and rehabilitation in developmental age (CRC Rome).
After the first meeting, the partnership became tangible and involved both centres at a deeper level. Indeed, this edition of Maker Faire Rome is already the second where the researchers and professionals from Sony CSL and CRC Rome are presenting the project, first in the start-up phase and now already with the first results.
ARTIS, the innovative software that works with AI
But what is it?
ARTIS is software that supports the rehabilitation or teaching of text comprehension with the help of artificial intelligence. The interface was developed starting from neuro-psycholinguistic reading comprehension models by focusing on the linguistic components of text processing.
ARTIS enables you to practice on texts at different levels in a personalised way. Thanks to AI algorithms, it is able to automatically extract keywords, associate pictograms, identify more complex vocabulary, generate semantic networks and propose exercises on certain grammatical components. ARTIS is aimed at primary and secondary school children with difficulties in understanding texts and can be used both in Italian and in English.
