Audace Sailing Team: Designing and Building Sustainable Sailboats.

Audace Sailing Team: Designing and Building Sustainable Sailboats.

The vast majority of marine manufacturing is based around fiberglass and plastics reinforced with high modulus fibers, which lead to a very troubling aftermath: all of the sailboats produced are abandoned or destined to landfill, making up a very difficult waste to process. With this in mind, and with the intent of winning 1001VelaCup, Audace Sailing Team was born. Involving 35 Engineering students from University of Trieste, AST presents the results of one year of design and 4 months of production: a sustainable skiff - a small performance sailboat manned by a crew of two people - created by the marriage of cashew nuts based resins and flax fibers, the new frontier of composites construction. AST plans to keep providing extra-curricular insight on sustainability, optimization and the problems that young engineers will face in the not so distant future, by involving even more students and building even more boats. Projects on the horizon include a boat constructed using only 3D printed recycled materials and a combination of natural fibers and bio-based resins.
