"Magnetometro Sismico"

The magnetometer and the seismic precursors

The term electromagnetic seismic precursor (Seismic Electromagnetic Precursor or SEP in Anglo-Saxon) i refers to a hypothesis that a strong earthquake could be expected by observing a strong local electromagnetic emission.

It has happened that on several occasions it has been found that earthquakes and volcanic activity are associated with the emission or variation of electrical and electromagnetic signals (EM signals) of natural origin. In the last decades observations made in many areas of the world have allowed to collect a large amount of signals that show EM variations associated with tectonic and volcanic events. The research world is committed to finding theoretical mechanisms to study the correlation between these EM signals and the tectonic and volcanic events that would generate them.

Our Institute, directly involved in the earthquakes of 1997 and 2016, has developed a sensitivity and an interest in the phenomenon of earthquakes. Already in the year 2000, when the Electronic and Electrotechnical courses were active, it has been equipped with two vertical pendulum seismic stations oriented according to the N-S and E-O directions. With the incorporation of the Institutes and the presence of the CAT course (Construction of the Environment and Territory), this sensitivity to the study of earthquakes and to the behavior of buildings has been strengthened by also achieving more relevant theoretical concepts.
Last year we participated with the Tavola Vibrante project, able to simulate the oscillations of earthquakes to better understand their actions on the structures of the buildings.
This year we decided to expand our skills also with the study of the so-called "seismic precursors" and in particular we have built an equipment for the detection and study of magnetic field variations.

The detection system consists of a sensitive sensor of a natural magnetic field, a signal conditioning circuit in order to enhance it and at the same time to filter all the disturbing components and an A / D acquisition and conversion system based on the Arduino technology. The data collected are stored in a database archive to be then studied and graphed.

Classe 4A Istituto Istruzione Superiore M.Polo - R. Bonghi - Assisi (PG)

The class consists of 23 motivated pupils, very close-knit and sensitive to novelties. They face the various projects with a positive spirit with competence and preparation. They are very available to the project activities that they face with availability to the update. Great quality is the great ability to work in a team. For the realization of the project, in order not to take time away from the curricular activities, they were available to work in the afternoon.
