Orange peels are rich in d-limonene, an ingredient present in many cleaning products and cosmetics. The natural fragrance perillic acid can be produced by biotransformation. Due to its high antimicrobial effect it is used as a natural preservative agent in the cosmetic industry.
The process of perillic acid is one of many to produce chemicals from a bio-based feedstock. The team of the EU funded project RoadToBio develop in cooperation with stakeholder a Roadmap to show possibilities to produce organic chemicals more bio-based. For further information www.roadtobio.eu.
