The BIOCOSI’ project provides a revolutionary and concrete solution to the problem of wastewater in the dairy supply chain, reversing the waste paradigm and reusing the latter as a resource for production, first of bioplastic (PHA - polyhydroxyalkanoates) and subsequently the creation of a rigid packaging (ricotta tray, milk bottle) 100% biodegradable and compostable. From the vision of wastewater no longer as waste but as a resource to the use of a consolidated and green technology, devised on the principles of circular economy, this project allows a complete reduction of pollutants of the dairy industry and their full exploitation (zero waste to end of the process), market-oriented and modernization of the agri-food supply chain. This technology, made in Puglia, uses two fundamental processes: the recovery and fermentation of the organic component (mainly lactose) from dairy waste to the production of bioplastics and the processing of the latter for the production of rigid packaging. The ENEA interest is to consolidate on a pre-industrial scale, an economically competitive process for the production of bioplastics alternative to the use of expensive raw materials (sugar, corn, etc.), which, in addition to ethical problems (biomasses) destined to human consumption) and environmental (high carbon footprint), solves the difficulties linked to the high costs of disposal of dairy waste.

Valerio Miceli

I carry out scientific research activity since 1990. After having won a scholarship in "Biocompatible Materials", at the National Center for Research and Development of Materials, I spend a period of two and a half years at the research and development laboratories of Fidia Advanced Biopolymer of Abano terme (PD), acquiring all the chemical-physical characterization techniques and defining the experimental and plant protocols for the development of biocompatible materials based on hyaluronic acid.
From 1993 to 2001, at the PASTIS-CNRSM, I joined a research team for the realization of some national projects on Innovative Materials for the Agrifood Sector: Organic Membranes "and Process Innovations for the Production of Dehydrated Food" and still "Use of High Pressure Treatment Technologies for the enhancement of typical products of the Mediterranean Area".
With a degree in Biological Sciences I am currently carrying out research at the ENEA of Brindisi, dealing with research and development of biodegradable materials and extraction of biomolecules from wastewater from the agri-food sector with particular attention to the study of viscoelastic properties of polymers.
Coordinator and / or manager of the ENEA Research Unit in research projects funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), Ministry of Economic Development (MISE PON - REC SMART CITIES AND COMMUNITIES AND SOCIAL INNOVATION), Apulia Region (FESR-ESF 2014-2020). KEO (knowledge Exchange Officer) of the thematic area Biotechnology for Health and Nutrition.
From 2018 I cover the role of Scientific Manager and Coordinator of the Regional Project "Development of innovative technologies and processes for the production of 100% BIOdegradable and adjustable packaging for a Sustainable, Circular and Intelligent Industry - BIOCOSI ”.
