Saving Plants thanks to Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology could help us in giving a new life to agro-food waste by converting the main components of lignocellulosic biomasses in nanoscaled products. In comparison to their bulk counterpart, organic nanomaterials, such as cellulose nanocrystals, lignin nanocapsules, chitosan nanoparticles, exhibit a whole range of different biochemical properties, which can be exploited to develop innovative nano-agrochemicals or to deliver active principles useful to control crop diseases, such as fungal and bacterial plant pathogens.

Giorgio M. Balestra is a Plant Pathology associated professor at the Dep. of Agriculture and Forest Sciences (DAFNE), University of Tuscia (Viterbo), where he coordinates a group of young researchers, led by Dr. Sara Francesconi and Dr. Daniele Schiavi, which are involved in finding alternative and sustainable solutions, such us molecular, -omics and nanotechnology based approaches, to traditional crop pests management. The group have been involved in several international projects with private and public companies since many years, thanks to the highly innovative proposed research lines.
